LORDS OF BLACK – Interview with Ronnie Romero

After two brilliant records, the spanish shooting stars LORDS OF BLACK got most attention, when their highly talented singer Ronnie Romero was chosen by legendary Ritchie Blackmore to become the new voice of RAINBOW on their outstanding festival reunion shows. A perfect match, and a dream come true for the Chilean born vocalist. After two live releases, including a new studio song with RAINBOW, Romero now returns with the third LORDS OF BLACK longplayer “Icons Of The New Days”, once again produced by Roland Grapow (MASTERPLAN a.o.), featuring a fantastic mix of traditional Power Metal and 80s Hard Rock.

Ronnie, how do you personally feel about the new album; did it turn out the way you wanted and expected it to be?
Absolutely. From the very begining on, we knew what the fans expect from us. Since this will be just the third album in our carreer, there is a high expectation around this release. So we’ve been working very hard and in my opinion, this the best album that we could have delivered

I can imagine, that the pressure was different this time, since the expectations on this record are much higher. How would you describe the songwriting and recording process this time?
Yes, like I told before, there is a high expectation and lot of new fans were waiting for new music. Like always, all the time that we spent on this new record was beyond exciting, composing new music with a different aproach and a, if I can say so, new style on the songs.

Where do you see the main differences to „II“? I mean, you have grown much as a band, played a lot and you are a much stronger unit nowadays.
More than that, we grew up in our internal relationship, feel more confident to each other and stronger than the in beggining. That’s the key in this band, all of us we want the same goals. And obviously you can see that, when we perform on stage.

A lot of things happned after the release of „II“, especially with you joining Rainbow as a singer. I guess we can say, that your life isn‘t the same anymore. How are you dealing with it, to suddenly stand in the spotlight that much?
Well, in fact I try to keep living the same simple life. I’m a normal guy who loves to meet friends, spent his time with the family, enjoy my kid, watch TV series, get some studies, etc… I always try that “fame” doesn’t affect me or the people around me. From this, I just always enjoy and love my job.

Did your experience with Rainbow also leave any impact on the new songs and the songwriting in general?
Not really, there is a completely different style of music. With Lords Of Black, we always want to explore new things and bring a lot of different influences to our music. Rainbow is an influence of course, but not a specifoc influence, there is so much more in the music of Lords Of Black.

Was there a certain moment, that you would call unforgettable?
Every moment touring and working with all my band mates last year. I mean, not just with Rainbow or Lords Of Black, but also the time with CoreLeoni. And the time with all the fans, the support from them, I really feel a lot of love from all – and that was a highlight last year for sure

Since Rainbow is of course a true legend, fronted by a genius like Ritchie Blackmore; do you also enjoy it to step back and work with your friends in Lord of Black again?
It’s just different: in the music, in the way to work day by day, and of course you can’t compare a band that exists for more than 40 years, with the other one active for five years. I love to work with Ritchie, and to be the Rainbow singer will always be the most important thing that I have ever done, but Lords Of Black is MY band, and nothing can replace that.

But this not enough, you have also joined CoreLeoni – the sideband from Gotthard’s guitar player Leo Leoni. How did that came and how did you enjoy those recordings?
I met Leo about four years ago, when Lords Of Black have been supporting Gotthard on their spanish tour, so we spent some time together talking about music, he gave some advices etc. And last year he just called me to talk about this project. It was so natural, I just went to his studio, we have been recording the songs, spending some really great times, without any pressure around. That was perfect

What do you personally connect with Gotthard and their early records?
Not that much really, hahaha. I went more deeo into Gotthard’s music, after Leo called me to do this. But I was really surprised, there are so many great songs, performed by an amazing band, with a singer who was out of this planet. By now I can say, that I love Gotthard’s music for sure

You are working with three different and fantastic guitar players: Ritchie Blackmore, Leo Leoni and Tony Hernando. How would you characterize each of them in your words?
Ritchie is the talent, there is no other, and never will be other like him, pure magic.

Leo is the passion, everything that he does, he does it with love and passion, there aren’t many musicians like him on these days.

Tony is the hard worker, he just spends all his time working for the band, more than anybody, he is the reason of Lords Of Black success.

You are born in Chile. How can we expect your youth and first contacts to Hard Rock? Which were the first bands you discovered and how?
I grew up in a family of musicians, so it was very easy to me to go into that. My father was a huge Hard Rock fan and of course the first band that he show me was Deep Purple, and they just blew me away. I mean, there are so many other bands that I love, like Journey, Dream Theater, Masterplan, Kansas, Queen, but there is a special connection between Deep Purple, my father (RIP) and me

You have reached so much over the past years. Is there still a dream you would like to fullfill yourself?
I just want to see my kid grow up, make my family happy, and keep working in this job that I love, I don’t need anything else.
