Blues rockers The Cold Stares from Indiana release “Mojo Hand”

For the past year, fans of the immensely popular video game Cyberpunk 2077 with Keanu Reeves have been nagging that the song Mojo Hand, which is heard in the game’s trailer The Gig, should be released. Now on the half-year anniversary of the band’s latest album Heavy Shoes, the Indiana-based blues-rock-based band The Cold Stares has finally released it as a single. Mojo Hand was mixed by Geordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Gov’t Mule) and has already been streamed over 100 million times via the trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 and is one of two of the band’s songs heard in the game. They are currently touring and at the same time preparing the recordings for their new album which is expected to be released later this year.

“Mojo Hand is about a woman who is like a force of nature,” explains guitarist Chris Tapp. “When she speeds up, it’s like a storm that has pulled in, bad weather, tornadoes, the whole choir. But the guy who likes her has Mojo Hands and manages to master her madness for the sake of love. ”

The story of The Cold Stares contains enough material for a drama series, cancer, suicide, betrayal, divorce. There is a sincerity that permeates the band’s songs with dark, multidimensional stories that run in and out through every turn and twist. Dirty, fuzzy rock & roll meets blues, garage and desert rock with a drop of Southern goth is a decent description of the band’s music. The subdued stories of the songs are engraved with complete sincerity. For guitarist Chris Tapp, drummer Brian Mullins and bassist Bryce Klueh, honesty is their hallmark.

“There’s actually nothing I feel uncomfortable talking about,” Tapp explains. If you do not allow yourself to be human then what happens? Well, you get others who have a hard time feeling shit because they think they are alone about it. Both Brian and I have been through divorce and I have just had cancer. We’ve had a pretty tough time lately and never had life served on a silver platter. We’re just an American working class band playing rock & roll. ”

The band’s latest album, Heavy Shoes, was mostly recorded in Sam Phillips’ studio in Memphis and contains a variety of themes such as depending on Save You Fom You, emotional torture on Prosecution Blues, destructive relationships on Heavy Shoes and manipulation on Election Blues. Tapp has not always had it so easy. At ten, he discovered that he was adopted. “I felt very alone for a very long time.” His grandfather whom he adored took his life and it was Chris who found him. “It was hard then and it has been hard ever since,” he says. “It has had a big impact on my life and it shows up in my songs. Sometimes it’s easier to deal with it in songs with fictional characters than to think about it. ”

As a child, his grandfather told of his own grandfather who smuggled alcohol during the Prohibition era. When no one else in the family wanted to talk about it, he decided to do some research himself and found out that during that time the sheriff and the deputy sheriff had visited his grandfather’s house and raped his sister. To protect his family, he hid under the porch until the sheriff and deputy sheriff returned. He shot both to death. He spent six days in jail but was later released. This trauma shocked the family and Tapp lived in the house when he was in his twenties. “My aunt was 103 years old and just a few years before she died, she started telling me about the incident.”

In 2009, Tapp was diagnosed with cancer in the third stage and the doctors gave him six months to live. This was followed by a year and a half of radiation and chemotherapy. “Nowadays I can say what I want a little more precisely and elegantly,” he explains.

Now the group is working best on their sixth studio album and these Knights of the Road have zigzagged through the US and Europe and played at bars, clubs and halls as well as played with Rival Sons, Spoon, Grand Funk Railroad and Thievery Cop. If it’s honesty you’re looking for then you’ve come to the right place. The Cold Stares is a rock & roll band that takes to the baton against society’s foundations to expose its hidden cracks. Thus, they allow themselves to be completely open with the fact that we are not alone.

The Cold Stares are:

  • Chris Tapp – Guitar
  • Brian Mullins – Drums
