Alestorm – Curse of the Crystal Coconut

5/10

Rumchugging Pirates. A deadly curse. Battles on the high seas. A big dose of humour.

Does it sound like the new Pirates of the carribean movie? Well luckily I’m not talking about a shitty movie. I’m talking about the new Alestorm album called “Curse of the crystal coconut”.

The guys from Scotland are still playing their classic brand of powermetal where every sylliable in some way tells a tale of the piratelife. At least seen from the more humourous side.
Songtitles like “Treasure Chest Party Quest”, “Tortuga”, “Zombies Ate My Pirateship” and “Pirate Metal Drinking Crew” says something about these guys sense of humour.

Compared to their earlier albums “Curse of the Crystal Coconut” feels a bit more on the light side. Besides the powermetal they have this time added elements of rock’n’roll, punk rock, black metal and even managed to throw some rap into one of the songs. If this is to have more fun, try new things or to fuck with the listeners remains to be seen but in their own way they make it work.
