Former Annihilator/D.O.A. member Randy Rampage (1960-2018) remembered.
Randall Desmond Archibald (February 21, 1960 – August 14, 2018), a.k.a. Randy Rampage, died from a heart attack at his home in North Vancouver, aged 58. Before his passing, he was working with the creators of Bloodied But Unbowed, a new documentary exploring Vancouver’s punk scene in the late 1970s.
Rampage founded Canadian hardcore punk band D.O.A. (1978-79, 1980-82, 2000-03, 2006-09), with whom he played bass and sometimes sang.
He was also lead singer for thrash metal band Annihilator during two eras, in 1988–1989 and from 1998 to 2000. Rampage appeared on their classic debut album “Alice in Hell” (1989) and the 1999 album “Criteria for a Black Widow”.
Annihilator main-man Jeff Waters said (in a 2017 interview with Metal Insider) that Rampage: “couldn’t sing, but he was the coolest attitude guy we’ve ever had in the band, because he was like a punk rocker. He played bass in a band called D.O.A., and had this attitude that was second to none.”
Rampage told Punk Globe that singing for Annihilator “was a fuckin’ blast. It was like this metal band that was really hot at the time but didn’t have a frontman, so their manager — a local music and porn promoter who D.O.A. had played for many times — recruited me,” he said. “I had never really done any serious vocal work before, so when Gary asked me if I knew of any heavy metal singers who were looking for a gig, I opened my mouth and said I was the guy, and then we were in a recording studio. Next thing I was in Fiasco Brothers [studio] recording. Annihilator was a good run, especially in Europe. I got fired for beating up the guitar player songwriter.”
Rampage was also front man of punk thrash metal band Stress Factor 9, formed in 2005, along with Annihilator drummer Ray Hartmann. In late 2012 he also performed live with a new band named ‘Rampage’.
