Danish singer/songwriter, guitarist and band leader Kim Melius Flyvholm Larsen was born in Copenhagen on October 23rd, 1945. In 1969 he founded one of the most successful Danish rock bands ever, Gasolin, who went on to release seven danish language studio albums before disbanding in 1978.

 

 

 

In 1974 Gasolin also released two albums in English language versions. Further sadly failed attempts to crack the international/ American market followed in “What A Lemon” (1976) and the 1978 swan song “Killin’ Time”. The live albums “Live Sådan” (1976) and “Live i Skandinavien” were successful, the latter selling 200 000 copies.

The band worked with internationally celebrated producers Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, Journey, Hawkwind, etc.), Felix Pappalardi (The Youngbloods, Cream, Mountain) and Flemming Rasmussen, who would later produce “Ride the Lightning”, “Master of Puppets” and “..And Justice for All” for fellow dane Lars Ulrich’s Metallica.

Larsen released his first solo album “Værsgo” in 1973 and went on to release many albums in his own name after Gasolin disbanded, including records with the bands Starfuckers (1978), Jungledreams (1980–1983), Bellami (1983–1992), Bell*Star (1993–1994) and Kjukken (1995–2018). Larsen’s solo albums has sold in excess of three million copies, “Midt om natten” (1983) being the best selling Danish album.

Larsen toured Scandinavia extensively throughout the decades and released his last solo album “Øst for Vesterled” in 2017. Kim Larsen died of prostate cancer at his home in Odense on September 30th 2018 after a lengthy illness. He was 72.
