Monster Magnet – A Better Dystopia

7/10

Ok, spank my ass and call me Judy. A cover album…. Usually that does not bode well. Prejudice starts working overtime. Shitty versions of the original, tired musicians that can not be bothered to make their own songs. And this from a band that I have been fond of since I saw the video to “Teenage negasonic Warhead”. Where is this going to go?

Well, as so many times before, prejudice is usually a load of crap. It does not often coincide with reality, just our preconceived ideas. And more often then not, you prove yourself the idiot if you happen to have some cells of humbleness in your soul.

One thing that I find sticks out or sits well with me is that in all cases the originals are honored and revered. What I found great is that the band has Monster Magneted these songs and made the album into their own as much as that is possible.

If you did not know that this was a cover album you would be forgiven. Since the choice of songs does make that viable hence there are not really your top 20 commonly known songs covered on this album.

One could say that the songs have been moderately modernized and pimped. But still not been tampered with in a way that you feel the song is not at all the same. It does, however give you a clearer insight in the inspiration for Monster Magnet in both music and lyrics through the years.

My favorite song is “Be Forewarned” (Pentagram). Here they have taken a somewhat psychedelic song and made it into something that would fit on the movie soundtrack of “From Dusk til Dawn”.

All in all, a good album, and extra credits for an intro that serves a point for once.
