Alice Cooper – Road
8/10
This is a highly entertaining record. Some examples: “I’m Alice” takes you straight back to the early days of the Alice Cooper group. Glam rock with 60’s pop melodies. “Welcome to the show” brings hard-drivin’ rock n roll in the Hanoi Rocks vein, complete with a glorious guitar duel between Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henriksen and/or Nita Strauss “All over the world” contains lively Stax-style brass. “The dead don’t dance” offers 80’s style pseudo-metal. “Road rats forever” is a piano-painted root-rocker. “100 000 miles” a mini-musical. Dammit, the cover version of The Who’s “Magic bus” even includes a drum solo! I don’t know if the ideas come from mr Cooper or from producer Bob Ezrin, but the ideas are great.
So, how does “Road” compare to the classic albums? Well, it’s not as great as “From the inside”, “Welcome to my nightmare” or indeed my personal favourite “DaDa”, but it’s pretty close. Alice himself knows how to put drama behind clever lyrics, whereas the guitar solos are second to none. What this record isn’t, however, is ground-breakin’. This is Alice Cooper as we’ve known him for many a-year.
