Beast in Black + Gloryhammer Double Headline Tour Review

9/10

The new year kicks of with an amazing tour with the most interesting power metal acts today. From Sweden we see the Viking themed BROTHERS OF METAL, singing hymns to Valhalla and delivering battle cries in Odins name, opening up the stage for the headliners; UK based GLORYHAMMER singing about the ultimate fantasy in space about the kingdom Fife and all it’s glory that been created by the founder Christopher Bowes (ALESTORM). And from Finland, also the 2nd headliner, we have BEAST IN BLACK with the ultimate synthwave combination together with fast guitars and high pitch singing!

The tour kicks off in Stockholm, Sweden and will continue until february before it finally reaches the finale in UK, London. Since Stockholm is my hometown, I of course attended what would be mine and most likely many peoples first concert of the year.

BROTHERS OF METAL (Power Metal)

“The 8-piece, hailing from Falun, Sweden consists of three vocalists (two male, one female), three guitar players, a bass player and a drummer. Their sound: A thunderous, catchy mixture of power metal, irresistible melodies, heavy riffs and some folkish elements; or as they used to call it – “True Heavy Metal”.”
– AFM Records

The 8-man(And Woman) band from Falun have been rocking the stage since 2012 with their comedic theatrical approach with Viking themed power metal! I’ve been a fan of this band ever since I heard the release of ‘Prophecy of Ragnarök’ and just knew I had too see this live! 2022 I had my first chance and watched their full setlist live which totally lived up to my expectations. This time, sadly, they were the opening act and I had to settle with 8 of their tracks live. However, even though their performance were short and sweet, they put on a great show and got the whole room singing along to “Yggdrasil” which was a sight to behold. This is one of those bands who loves what they are doing and are not afraid to show it in order to have a great time together with the audience.

Best performance: ‘Defenders of Valhalla’
Rating: 10/10

Setlist:
1. The Death of the God of Light
2. Prophecy of Ragnarök
3. Ride of the Valkyries
4. Concerning Norns

GLORYHAMMER (Power Metal)

“In the not-so-distant Kingdom of Fife, there lies a band like no other. GLORYHAMMER embodies the very essence of power metal and epic fantasy, with a sound so majestic and grandiose that it could only be the work of the gods themselves. Led by the manifestation of extreme trumpet-chaos in battle-mode, GLORYHAMMER has been waging a never-ending fight against the forces of “Zargothrax” since their formation in 2010. With their soaring hyper-melodies, multitudinous orchestra-explosions and thunderous nano-guitar riffs, they have become the undisputed champions of the power metal scene, drawing in legions of fans from across the galaxy with their epic tales of intergalactic warfare, cosmic sorcery, and heroic deeds. ”
– Napalm Records

One can’t deny that the whole concept behind GLORYHAMMER is one of the most creative ones in the genre today. From the mind of Christopher Bowes, keyboardist in the beginning before Michael Barber replaced him during live performances, GLORYHAMMER revolves around a fantasy universe, involving flying unicorns and nuclear warfare, if that even could be summarized in two words. This whole universe is filled with all kind of lore and stories that it even have it’s own Fandom wiki page!

So the whole concept is really original and well made, but how about their music and live performance? Quite awesome if you ask me! The music is so catchy that you find yourself humming the melodies for weeks and is very crowd friendly when it comes chanting the songs together live. I’ve never had this fun at show before with their comedic approach to the whole concept, with witty dialogues exchanged between the tracks and goblins jumping onto the stage playing saxophone solos.

Best performance: ‘Hootsforce’
Rating: 9/10

Setlist:
1. Holy Flaming Hammer of Unholy Cosmic Frost
2. Gloryhammer
3. The Land of Unicorns

14. The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee

GLORYHAMMER Line-Up:

BEAST IN BLACK (Heavy/Power Metal)

“The five-piece, Helsinki based heavy metal band BEAST IN BLACK was founded by Anton Kabanen soon after he had parted ways with BATTLE BEAST in 2015. By the end of 2015 the band played their first gig as opening act for NIGHTWISH. The making of “Berserker” was already in progress back then and it was completed in summer 2017. A deal was signed with Nuclear Blast almost immediately after the completion of the album.”
– Nuclear Blast Records

Im a sucker for “Blade Runner” and all “Cyberpunk” themed concepts, and a band themed revolving this can’t be nothing else than a success for me. Like BROTHERS OF METAL, I fell for this music ever since I heard “Blind and Frozen” for the first time. With synthwave and power metal fused together, we have BEAST IN BLACK; A unique sound which is ridiculously catchy both live and streamed. Also, one can’t deny that the whole ZZ TOP synchronized guitar raises is nothing else than charming. Yannis vocals is nothing else than just amazing merged together with this music. Even though you could hear his voice being a bit distraught in the beginning, he quickly recovered during the second in the setlist.

Best performance: ‘Blind and Frozen’
Rating: 8/10

1. Blade Runner
2. Bella Donna

Anton Kabanen – Guitar, Vocals (Backing)
Máté Molnár – Bass
Kasperi Heikkinen – Guitar
Atte Palokangas – Drums

Closing Words:

This was a very crowded event with a queue that lasted around two corners with hundreds of people, queueing to get inside. It was very nice seeing some new songs in the setlist of all the bands and they all gave a great show by performing them. You can always rely on these bands to put on a great show but right now I’m missing new music from BEAST IN BLACK and BROTHERS OF METAL. There have been 3 years since the release of ‘Dark Connection’ and 4 years since ‘Emblas Saga’, a new album is very much needed if it’s gonna make me come back and see them perform once more. If you however haven’t seen them before, you definitely should catch them right now during the tour!

I have been a Metalhead ever since I was old enough to comprehend what music was. Something really called to me when I for the first time heard my fathers IRON MAIDEN albums being played, that gave me such goosebumps which only made me want more! Ever since then, I’ve been listening into multiple genres with the hunger of exploring new metal music and keeping track of upcoming bands. My favorite genres today is Black Metal and Blackgaze which includes most of my favorite bands, but my biggest favorite of them all is called HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. I’m really passionate about the metal community and frequently goes to concerts to try to support as many band as possible by buying merch and promoting them by doing reviews. I believe with all my heart that the metal community will always be a underground society that will never die, and all it’s habitants are the most amazing individuals that have walked this earth.
