Bloodywood – Rakshak

8,5/10

Bloodywood is an Indian folk metalband from New Dehli. They began as a prody band that uploaded metal covers of popsongs on YouTube. Later on they went on to write their own material. In February 2022, they released this debutalbum, “Rakshak” which is the centre of my attention, for the moment.

Bloodywood have a sound like no one else in the world, right now. Bloodywood is equal parts joyfullness furious and incendiary. Bloodywood in my opinion has found the right formula for their debutalbum. It’s heavy, endless ingenuity and very entertaning. “Rakshak” is a thrilling ride from western and eastern sound, with a mix of english and Hindi lyrics, they certainly catches the moment with either rap or growl but also rap with growl, that makes me put on a big smile. “Rakshak” is that sort of a album, that brings tremendous joy to listen to.

The “Rakshak” album also contains traditional Indian instruments such as bamboo flute, sitar and the handdrum dholaki. These instruments is also one of the reasons that the sound of Bloodywoods tunes are intriging. These traditional Indian instruments are also one of the reasons why the sound of the album Rakshaks music and lyrics is exciting and gives a bit of Indian mysticism to the albums song material.

“Rakshak” starts off with Gaddaar which means traitor. This is a song that can be about any politician who would rather enrich themselves than those who put him / her in that political position. Somehow is this song a fantastic start for the record. It’s takes off hard, tough and full of energy. It’s like a rushing herd of angry elephants that do not bend an inch on their way forward. In Indian folklore the elephant stands for the representation of strength and fragile natur.

In general I’m not much of a rap fan although there is some songs I like. These peace-loving, animal-protecting gentlemen of Bloodywood, is the exception that confirms my thoughts about rap. This is really fun, exciting and a bit of a revelation.

I wouldn’t mind playing this album, “Rashak” for my neighbours on high volume on a Friday or Saturday night. But then a agian, it might end up with a visit by authorities at my place. In all I really think that Bloodywood is ready for do their mark on the metalscene. My thoghts is that this debut album from Bloodywood is a product that have to explode in popularity. If you are prepared to be runned over by a debut album then let it be “Rakshak” by Bloodywood. Listen to their debut album!
