Candlemass – Sweet Evil Sun

9/10

How do you keep going and deliver high quality music in a genre that is a bit narrow and defined to some extent? Well, you can do what Candlemass does, and continue to make the corners a bit wider every time.

Take the musical development forward with small changes and add-ons that is just a regular Candlemass song or album. But looking a bit deeper it is new stuff incorporated in the well-built brand that is Candlemass.

Take the duet in “When Death Sighs” as a prime example. The song starts with yet a huge balls riff, slow tempo, and yet more heavy riffing. But in this song Candlemass brings in the amazing voice of Avatarium Jennie-Ann Smith to do some exemplary work with the chorus.

There is even a little passage in the song that could feature in a musical. Who would have thought that you get that reference listening to Candlemass!!?

Overall, I found that listening to the album I had one question that would not leave me; How many fat ass riffs can you get into one album, and it still does not get boring at all??

I came to the conclusion that in this case a whole bloody lot of fat ass riffs!! The interaction between the 2 guitar players (Lars Johansson & Mappe Björkman) is a well-oiled partnership that I have never heard sounding better and more synchronized than on this album.

The vocals from Johan Längquist sounds formidable as well. He has used the time in the studio to get the most out of his voice and his diversity in attacking the songs are great.

Songs and the build of them are also well executed, nothing to complain about here. There is a more melodic feel to the music and there is also a bit more easily accessible songs on this album. More choruses that are more rememberable to the listener I would say.

So, if you like your music riff strong, not fast, and heavy, and with a feeling for building likeable songs then this is an album for you. For me it is, and I think that this will likely make it´s way to my top 5 for 2022.
