Chez Kane – Powerzone

7/10

If you’re a fan of melodic rock, you probably haven’t missed the hype surrounding Chez Kane since her debut last year. I was among the ones who missed the boat. I guess I just didn’t believe the hype. Music that is said to take us back to the 80’s is quite common these days, and it’s far from a great music guarantee. But during the past year, people have just talked more and more about Kane, so when the chance emerged to dive into her follow up to the succesful debut, I eagerly jumped the chance.

It didn’t take long for the album to win me over. This is undoubtly one of the most colorful 80’s-flashbacks in later years. The nostalgia feels genuine and captures the original sound really good. It lies very close to Vixen, but there’s also touches of Kiss, Robin Beck and Danger Danger in her sound. What really grabs me is the energy, the album is filled with joy and playfulness, wether it comes out in anthems like Rock You Up or Powerzone, saxophone inferno Love Gone Wild, unresistable hit tune (The Thing We Do) When We’re Young in Love or epic closure Guilty of Love, it’s always with the same genuine joy and happiness.

But is Powerzone something more than just a simple flashback? Perhaps not. If you look for something that really makes a mark in history, like the classics this one is trying to imitate, you should probably move on. Of course, this is no real match for the original masterpieces of the 80’s. But does that matter? Not really. AOR albums are rarely this joyful nowadays, and when all songs work and the sound stretches this greatly through the many treats of the melodic rock tree, I won’t complain. I’d rather jump the boat and hook up with the hype. Chez Kane is easily one of the most interesting AOR artists of today! Check this album out and see for yourself. Have fun!
