Destruction – Born To Perish
German Thrash legends Destruction is a band that has always been there in the metal world. They´ve been around since early 80´s in different shapes and forms. Never really gained a successful era, more cult status /following. 37 years into their career they are still as angry as ever. This is their 17th! release to date . Fasten your seatbelts and lets join their manic thrashparty.
Kicking off with the title track “Born to Perish” it shows a band not ready to slow down, angry as ever just full on thrash. In “Inspired By Death” Schmier challenges himself with a different approach than on the rest of the record. “Betrayal” got a chorus that´ll get stuck in your head after you finished listening to the album. A thing that captures my ears is the ferocious drumming of ex Primal Fear and Annihilator skinsman Randy Black. New guitar player Damir Eskic will later on show his skills and the reason he is in Destruction. During the chorus Schmier can be heard once again challenging his vocal chords.
Next up is one of my favorite tracks “Rotten” which is a bit slowed down and the first taste of what the lyrics are about: State of the world. “Betrayal” follows the same pattern as “Rotten” lyrically: Greed and Inhuman behaviors . Third straight song about our world. “Filthy Wealth” is so melody wise it could have fitted any Motörhead song.
“Butchered for life” now I haven´t found it out but not unlikely a song to celebrate the history of the band and it´s fans. Starts out slowly but in the end it still gets to charged up to be a song you cannot miss out on who´s playing.
It´s a close call on the album for me on the subject of favorite tracks. “Tyrants of the Netherworld” is a furious and brutal assault on our ears that shows off the bands best hooks and riffs on the album. This song must have been the newcomers audition song. I wouldn´t want to be in Randy Blacks clothes after this one. “We Breed Evil” is the albums “nothing to see here-move on” song. Still with great groove and those furious guitars.
A mind like mine who almost evolves around music and metal every woken hour I react instantly when seeing a song called “Fatal Flight 17”. It throws me back to Gary Moore and his “Murder In The Skies”. And yes! Of course it´s about that fatal plane crash from 2014. A thrash metal version of the Gary Moore classic in new clothes and words. Final track
“Ratcatcher” shows that they can do fast songs that got catchy lyrics without getting too cheesy.
Nothing I think on this record will gain a lot of new fans if the band don´t get the chance to tour the world with bigger bands. It will keep their fanbase happy and assure them that Destruction is a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
