Halestorm – Back from the Dead

9/10

Man, I am a sucker for easy listening rock. What some of my more illiterate friends at the shift of the millennium degradingly called college rock. Easy to relate to, easy to sing along to, accessible, and just damn good rock music in my opinion.

Halestorm with Lizzy Hale leading from the front is like a harder Pink with a truckload more attitude for me. The music and lyrics speak for itself when you talk attitude.

“I Come First” gives you a nice fresh fistful of just that. “People, get the hell out of my way! I will command space and room, whatever you f’**ing think about it!” Nice uplifting song and I think it will find a place on my playlist for the gym quite soon.

Attitude reeks all through the album. Whether it is the softer attitude for the two ballads “Terrible Things” & “Raise Your Horns” or the more in your face attitude as in “Psycho Crazy”, the title track “Back From The Dead” or “Wicked Ways”. Many have tried to deliver attitude in a “here I am, I will command attention and space” but not many can back that up with a performance. This is one vocalist that can do just that. Just listen to “My Redemption” and you hopefully will get what I mean.

Not just with the attitude does the group impress. The songs are good, really good. The composition is grand here, you have engaging verses, crowd and sing along friendly choruses and passages that will leave you wanting to be part of the music wherever you listen to it.

Lizzy Hale delivers good tone, great song melodies and a very diverse delivery. Vocalists that can deliver and project a sense of engagement in their singing stand out from the rest in my book.  Here you have both tone and engagement. It lifts the songs at least 20% from already being good. There is belief in what she is singing. “Steeple” gives a reflection of that.

You can not say that the rest of the musicians performing are doing a bad job either. Backing up their vocalist and sounding just as involved as she does. But they make up the background and support for the voice that is in front. There is no other way of describing it. And it mixes well.

This is a really good album with a mind-numbing energy level all the way through. It is not musically revolutionizing at all. It is plain entertainment with a ferocious attitude. So, suck it up, you are never going to shut me up, as the song “Bombshell” goes.
