HammerFall live at Dalhalla 20/7-19

hammerfall dalhalla

To see a metal band on a stage like this is almost as looking on when two worlds collide. The band puts on its normal routine for a show but the distance between the audience and the stage, and the age difference maybe between the “normal HammerFall concert goers” and tonight’s audience are constantly showed throughout the set. The most obvious part is the “call and response” part. Yes Dalhalla has a small section close to the stage for standing audience and they were on their toes all night. But the rest is seats (imagine quite a giant amphitheater). It falls dead to the ground here but probably works out great in clubs and arenas, even festivals. But Dalhalla is another ballgame all together for a band like HammerFall.

The band does its best to ignore the situation and they put on what seems to be a show on autopilot. Dalhalla tonight is only half full which makes it a very quiet place. I came to the conclusion that even if you don´t like the band on record, try go see them live. The songs are far heavier than the studio version. A song like “Hammer High” could even evolve into a heavy metal anthem and I vision the song to be the bands “The Trooper” where Joacim should have run out with giant banners, not Union Jack but with a flag picturing their own mascot Hector.
With “Renegade” the audience seems to get what HammerFall is all about and all of a sudden wakes up, dancing and singing along for the first time.
Joacim leans very much on his powerful vocals which hasn´t really changed a lot during the 22 years the band has existed. This is shown in what I think must be the bands heaviest song? “Riders of the Storm”.

“Hammer high” feels like a song they have to play. It feels like they´ve speeded the song up just to have done it and then moved on. After that we are invited to a world premiere: new track “One against the World”. Not much to say about that one, need to hear it again to have a say on that.

Last part of the show is actually quite cool. HammerFall turns into HammerFolk
They invited two world champions on keyed fiddle and one on acoustic guitars and they did a solo with bits and pieces of HammerFall songs. I forgot that it ´was a solo because of the twist of letting those three instruments take the stage instead of boring guitar or bass solos. It was actually amusing.

Before the show the DJ in Dalhalla decided it was a good idea to play the band’s latest single “(We make) Sweden Rock” over and over again so when it actually was played live it was just another song in the set. I have of course heard it before but it was like your most hated commercial on TV.
The grand Finale was of course “Hearts on fire” followed by a nice firework to salute the evening.
