Hatriot – The Vale of Shadows

7/10

After listening to this album a few turns, I decided that this should be a soundtrack to your self- mutilation. It is so relentless in its mood. The setting is so incredibly evil and harrowed all the way through that you almost want to hurt yourself even if you were not that way inclined before you listened to the album.

The next generation of Souza (Cody) who since 2015 is responsible for both bass and vocals have taken his fathers (Steve “Zetro” Sousa) somewhat individual vocals and taken it to a whole different level. This is demonical, painful, abyss like screaming at a high level.

Thrash album as it is, it is mainly fast, riff strong and aggressive. The dueling between the two guitars whether it is a solo or just making up the melody is well composed and complementary to each other. Kosta Varvatakis and Kevin Paterson are doing a fine job driving the riff side of the songs forward. Backed by the 2 Souza’s forming the rhythm section (Cody as mentioned on Bass & Nick on the drums) they create a very unholy entity together.

They take the music from the previous album “From Days Unto Darkness” another level dark. You almost feel that this is more evil and dark than some of the black metal acts currently operating our planet. But “Hatriot” do stay loyal to their thrash roots regarding everything that is the music, it is just such an incredibly energetic and angry delivery of music for 42 minutes you need to sit and catch your breath a bit and figure out what just hit you.

“Verminous And Vile” has an intro that reminds me of the old classic “Terror on Elm Street” and the irregular guitars in the song combined with the guttural vs chaotic vocals almost makes this a bit scary.

The intro of “Only Red Remains” had me a bit confused to start with. I knew I recognized the voice. But I could not figure it out for a bit. But realizing that it is the voice of Richard Kuklinsky or the Ice-Man as he was called (Infamous hitman) gives a chill down your spine. Because what he is describing is giving one of his victim 30 minutes to somehow find divine intervention before dying a horrible death.

So now I am going to find my breath, rest a bit. And even if this is a dark & chilling album, I am already looking forward to the next one.
