Hexed – Pagans Rising

8/10

Tricky thing. Reviewing a band who I’ve become friends with, but we are all professionals here (well they are, I am just a writer….) The second assault from Uppsala’s finest Hexed is upon us.
From the first album it’s obvious Within Temptation flirts but this new record has more of its own version of symphonic dark metal. Tina do sound angry here and there throughout the record and the most obvious Within Temptation nods are erased and they seem to have found an own kind of dark symphonic metal style instead

I can´t explain it better, the choruses are here more borrowed from bands like Dimmu Borgir. Humming along to the line “open the gates of hell” from the first song “Pagans rising” is quite easy. As the third song “Stigma Diaboli” starts off in a furious tempo I was waiting for 100 mph song actually.

“Repentance” has been out for a while and if not this track become a standard live set song and a fan favourite, I will have a serious talk with the band (for excluding it in future live sets-and the persons who dislike the song…). I can easily imagine a crowd taking over the chorus to this one. It’s such a high standard on this release once again from this band. “Incantation” crawls up on you and it is indeed one of the better songs.

“Prophecy” is a song that I’m curious about the background.

The band hasn’t sounded this angry before I think. “Symphony of tragedy” is the only song that I feel is kind of a leftover from the debut album.
Starting to figure out a standout track is another tricky part. How the band, in the future, shall raise their bar once again is a very interesting and exciting thought.

If you’re into Symphonic, Progressive, Black Metal (not the most extreme part of that genre at all) this might be for you. More melodic black here and there throughout the album. “Moorfield” leaves you with a feeling of wanting more. Please don’t let it be too long before record number 3 is given to us!
