Honeymoon Suite – Alive

5/10

With last years concert at Sweden Rock Festival in very fond memory, a new album by Canadas finest AOR-export is welcomed with open arms. Sadly, Honeymoon Suites does the same mistakes a lot of AOR bands do these days in putting all too much faith in modern technology. Alive is stained with a very slick sound with autotune, compressor and no rough edges. The songs aren’t necessarily bad, but none of them take off either.

Maybe the band just plays it a little too soft. Of course, Honeymoon Suite has never been a particular tough rocking band, but listening to the 80’s classics there is at least some muscle underneath the sugar sweet surface, and that blending of the two is just what made the band so appealing. There are tunes on this album I do find myself huming along to, such as Find What You’re Looking For, but it takes all the way to song number eleven before something really happens. All of a sudden it sounds really great, like the album is finally lifting. But then I recognize the tune, and realize I have reached the bonus tracks, where some of the old classics are being remade. And hearing Love Changes Everything and New Girld Now obliterates all the new stuff from my memory.

It would be easy to blame it all on the production. But considering what happened hearing the bonus tracks is quite telling that the songs are also lacking. Next time I hope the band does something with a little more power and strength. If they can do it live; why not in a studio?
