In This Moment – Mother

6/10

Having witnessed In This Moment live last November I know the force of nature of the band and especially singer Maria Brink. The first track “Fly Like An Eagle” is somewhat a teaser of what’s to come. The force of nature I described in the beginning appears for the first time in song number four: “The In-Between” when she sounds like she wants to slap everyone around her in the face with a baseball bat. A song that throws me back to earlier records from the band. Can´t help but think of a song like “Whore” when I hear this one.

Cover songs should be placed as bonus tracks. Especially when it is a song like “We Will Rock You” and above that Maria is outsung(?) by Lzzy Hale on this one. Taylor Momsen (of The Pretty Reckless) does a decent job too.

The title track “Mother” feels different to the rest of the songs. I can’t put my finger on it but it differs. With an album consisting of 14 songs the band build it up in a good way because I feel that it is in the middle of the album it has its peak. It starts with “As Above-so Below”. Knowing how they work, even a slow starting song like “Born In Flames” you can not be sure on how the song will progress, a full on furious attack or a dreamlike scenario of a song. Feels like the peak of the album was song seven through to nine so good work there.

“Holy Man” sounds like it´s a cover song. I do feel that I somehow has heard this before. A catchy song with a catchy repeating lyrics. Easy to like and easy to rhyme to.
The band Ded is a band I have never heard of but the song “Hunting Ground” feature Ded.s singer Joe Cotela is a song that most likely will be on repeat on American rock radio and a future live favourite.
Then to the last part of the album.14 songs is a bit too long for this band to keep my interest.
I really do like this band but here the feeling is that they are about to depart from the heavier songs and more and more stepping into electronica/industrial worlds but they don´t know how so they put in too many songs. There are songs that could have been cut out from the final mix. Last song “Into Dust” is six minutes and as close to a ballad as In This Moment will ever come . It will be very exciting to hear the next step in their recording career, where it might take them. This is no way near albums like “Ritual” or “Adrenalize” in my world.
