Jerry Cantrell @Lollapalooza Stockholm

6/10

Jerry CantrellJerry Cantrell – lead guitarist  of legendary grunge icons Alice in Chains played Lollapalooza Stockholm on his current solo tour on Sunday. About half of the 45 minute set consisted of Alice in Chains songs, but with Cantrell being the main songwriter of the band over the years it was perhaps not a surprise that you could feel familiar with the solo material as well. Still of course it was hits like Rooster and Would? that generated the biggest cheers from the crowd.

Cantrell, who allegedly has now been sober for almost 20 years looked and sounded good and seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself on stage. An early slot like this (3 pm) and a festival stage in the outdoors is perhaps not the ideal setting for this kind of music. I would prefer a club or similar, but still I prefer to hear the old Alice in Chains material in this form rather than being performed by the current version of Alice in Chains. AiC without Layne Staley would be like Queen touring without Freddie Mercury… So when it’s not the real deal, let’s not pretend it is.

Best in show: Rooster (Predictable, I know. But it is still a hell of a song).

Worst: Why only 45 minutes?

Disappointment of the day: I was dead certain Cantrell would make a surprise guest appearance with Pearl Jam later in the day but it never happened.
