Kataklysm – Meditations
6/10
When it comes to Death Metal I’m kind of a novice but my curiosity makes me wanna explore other genres in hard rock than the usual stuff I’m listening to. Kataklysm is a canadian band and their hometown is Montreal. They were formed in 1991 and if I believe what’s on the internet the band has developed their music since the start in the early nineties. They started out as one of the fastest band in metal and if we compare the new album “Meditations” with that they have been slowing down quite a bit.
This is more kind of Thrash Metal and they are doing it well. It’s full speed forward when the album kicks off with songs called “Guillotine” and “Outsider”. Believe me when I say that I’m very pleased with the fact that there is no bloody intro on this album. It starts right away with high energy and Oli Beaudoin shows directly what a great drummer he is. My interest is on top and they are keeping it up over the next two songs as well. “The Last Breath I’ll Take Is Yours” and “Narcissism” are two of my favourites on the album. After this first quartet of songs something is happening. It’s not getting boring or so but the songs are getting longer and in my opinion Kataklysm handles the shorter songs better.
I believe this could be fun watching live so if there’s a chance I very much would like to see this band live and they will be playing Sweden in november along with Hypocrisy on a coheadline-tour. It’s a lot of fun when you as a writer on a magazine finds out there is more music out there that you can appreciate. Kataklysm was a big surprise for me and I will definitely listen more to this band.
