Leprous – Pitfalls

6/10

This is kind of a tricky record. Not made for the average metal/ hard rock fan out there. If i am to explain how they sound they are closer to Haken /Devin Townsend than anything. There are some catchy melodies and vocal lines here and there but in all it takes a whole lof of you as a listener. I could also imagine a band like Cult of Luna actually, but without the massive sonic attack they are known for. On the complete other side a song like ”Lose Hope” even got a touch of 80´s synth music. A third thing that comes to mind is ”Lounge Metal”- I for one dislike the different genres of metal but in a way to explain the music it is a good thing.

A few months back i reviewed Sonata Arctica and they surprised me by stepping out of their comfort zone. I think Leprous thought the same with this record. The whole album melts into one long song for the first part. When “By My Throne” comes on it´s the first glance of what l would think of when I hear the name Leprous

The second part of the album is the more interesting part. From the song “At The Bottom” and all the way to the last song “The Sky is red” they go a bit back to earlier albums. A song like “Foreigner” is just what I did expect the album to sound like.. This is a challenging record to listen to. You need a few times to listen to it before you can judge it. Even I will give it a try further on maybe.
