MEGADETH – THE SICK, THE DYING…AND THE DEAD!
8/10

Do people still give records several chances, these days? I hope so, for Dave Mustaine’s sake. Megadeth has rarely been the most easily accesible band, and their new album is no exception to that rule. Mainman Mustaine once described Megadeth’s music as progressive jazz-influenced metal in punk-tempo (or something along those lines) and that’s what he brings to the table on Megadeth’s sixteenth studio album. Complex song structures, angry riffing, uncompromising drums and virtuoso guitar solos – it’s all here. Brazilian lead guitarist Kiko Loureiro frequently makes his instrument sound like a synthesizer. Or an angry bee. And Mustaine ain’t one bit happier than he usually is. The plague, drug abuse, war, the Chernobyl catastrophe – if there’s a sorrow, Mustaine sings about it. Possibly for therapeutical reasons, seeing how content he’s reported as being onstage, lately.
What I miss with the album are contrasting pieces such as the haunting “Poisonous shadows”, which adorned previous album “Dystopia” (2016) or quirky numbers such as oldies “Lucretia” or “High speed dirt”. Or is this what we’re getting with “Killing time” or “Mission to Mars”? Still, one couldn’t complain to Megadeth for being too much metal…

With Slayer demised, Anthrax releasing refreshed oldies and Metallica not up to much, Megadeth surely are the kings among the big four.
