Naglfar – Cerecloth

From the grim and frost bitten kingdoms of northern Sweden – the city of Umeå to be more precise – comes the diabolic black metal horde Naglfar. After almost 30 years in Satan’s service the band have cemented their place as one of the truly legendary acts within the Swedish black metal scene.

The debut record “Vittra” was released in 1995 and now the time is here for Naglfar’s 7th album, namely “Cerecloth”. Eight long years have passed since the most recent release “Téras” – a very good album – so it really is about time for some new evil tunes from these icons. Expectations were high as always when these norsemen gift us with a brand new gem.

The album kicks off strong with the opening title track, immediately sending the message that Naglfar are back with the same power and aggressiveness as always. The record then proceeds with the magnificent song “Horns”. A perfectly balanced track; both catchy yet eerie and filled with beauty and grace as well as darkness and grit.

The album contains some very good songs of extremely solid black metal. “Vortex Of Negativity”, “Cry Of The Serafim”, “A Sanguine Tide Unleashed”, “Necronaut”
as well as the closing track “Last Breath of Yggdrasil”. It’s very clear that Kristoffer Olivius and his band of brothers know exactly what they’re doing. This really is how the pros do it. Melodic and catchy black metal, but with an ever present feeling of that genuine cold and evil old school vibe.

There isn’t a lot of crazy blast beats and utter chaos, so if you’re looking for complete and total mayhem this might not be for you. However, if you want well produced and well composed black metal full of memorable hooks and melodies; this should be right up your alley.

When it comes to a grade, I’ve been having some trouble deciding if “Cerecloth” is a 7 or 8. What the hell, let’s say 8. I’m feeling generous. It might not be the most innovative or diverse album of 2020, but it contains some really tasty riffing and especially a lot of memorable mid tempo stuff.

Fans will definately not be disappointed and everyone who likes classic, melodic Swedish black metal really have an album to check out ASAP.
