Steve Hackett – Wild orchids 2023 vinyl edition

7/10

“Wild orchids” (2006) can be seen as a younger sibling to ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett’s exquisite “To watch the storms” from 2003. And surely, this record too presents great tracks in a wide variety of styles. We’ve got “Transylvanian Express” which blends ghostly oriental melodies with virtuoso guitar playing. The groove of “Down street” makes me think of U2 with drops of Frank Zappa. On the suggestive version of Bob Dylan’s “Man in a long black coat”, Steve plays his first instrument, the harmonica; elsewhere (“Howl”) he lets his Les Paul howl like a warewolf. “She moves in memories”, on the other hand, is a stunning piece of purely orchestral work. The record, however, is quite a bit more laidback than its older sibling, thus galning a lower grade. And a considerably shorter review.

For this vinyl debut of the album, “Wild orchids” has been “Mastered specificlly for vinyl”, which can be heard in its very warm, yet sharp soundscapes.
