Stygian Fair – Aradia
7/10
Just over two years ago, I debuted as a Stargazed writer, reviewing the previous Stygian Fair album “Equlibriun”. I started off by describing these Swedish northerners as a classic heavy metal band, far away from modern soundscapes and loudness wars. Quite the same is true for the follow-up “Aradia”, although I do sense a feeling of more is more. The melodies are stronger, the riffs dirtier. Furthermore, more than one toe is being dipped into the waters of thrash and prog, thus making “Aradia” a dark and dramatic, thoroughly entertaining listen. Comparisons to other bands ultimately lead to outfits such as Nevermore or The Lord Weird Slough Feg. However, Stygian Fair are an individual entity of their own, this much thanks in no minor part to returning singer Andreas Stoltz (Hollow, Binary Creed). He is a dynamic voice filled with passion and strength. More often than not, Stoltz’s voice is being augmented with harmony vocals, creating a kind of magic.
If you’re seeking some quality heavy metal for the autumn, do mark August 25th in your calendar.
