Suzi Quatro – No Control
7/10
Suzi Quatro has always been amazingly cool. But among all of the legends from the glam rock scene of the 70’s, she is one of those who has held a lower profile since the heydays. She pops up once in a while, maybe releasing an album and goes on tour, but I’d guess very few people have heard anything she’s done later than 1979. And that includes myself.
So does that lower my expectations? Not really. Having already been quite blown away by Magnums great live album “Live at the Symphony Hall”, I have kind of a feeling that 2019 will be a good year for the veterans. And as far as Suzi Quatro goes, it sure is! “No Control” is a real blast! Old school rock ‘n’ roll that gives the feeling of having been recorded live in a basement studio in one take (a compliment, of course). Bluesy guitars, rock ‘n’ roll drums, funky bass, soulful piano, cool harmonica, punky vocals… It’s all there!
The songs are also great. The power of “No Soul/No Control”, the attitude of “Going Home”, the pomp of “Love isn’t Fair”, the loungy blues feeling of “Easy Picking”… they all strike the right note. In the end, the only thing i kind of lack are the real musical diamonds that would make this album really stick out. That’s the only thing that’s keeping me from giving this an eight. But this must be one of the strongest sevens I’ve ever given. So if you are into Suzi, or just 70’s hard rock in general, don’t miss Suzis new album!
