Sylvaine, “Nova Scandinavian Tour 2023” Review

8/10

After a spectacular performance earlier this year at Gefle Metal Festival, SYLVAINE returns once again to Sweden and comes for the first time to ever perform in Stockholm. In usual agenda I packed my stuff (Not my bag however because of new law restrictions in Sweden) and went out to the venue looking forward to an enchanting performance once again by the talented Kathrine Shepard.

SYLVAINE is the solo music project of Norwegian metal multi-instrumentalist Kathrine Shepard. The project began in Oslo in 2013 and has released four albums to date. In 2019, Shepard became the first woman to earn a nomination for best metal album at the Norwegian Grammy Awards.

Truly worthy of such nomination also if you ask me. I’ve been listening to the project ever since the release of ‘Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone’ (2018) album, which is the 3rd studio album to been released. Whether played as an album or performed live, SYLVAINE truly unleashes the soundscape of a dark, terrifying forest that also contains a mesmerizing beauty.

What: Nova Scandinavian Tour 2023
Where: Stockholm, Nalen Klubben
When: 15/11-23
Rating: 8/10

JONATHAN HULTÉN (Folk)

“Inspired by a wide variety of genres such as blues, film scores, electronica, grunge and by illustrators like Tove Jansson and Yoshitaka Amono, singer/songwriter Jonathan Hultén’s debut album ‘Chants From Another Place’ was Released in March 2020 and draws you into a deeply reflective and personal world of art and poetry.

Since then, a series of video performances and hand drawn animated music videos have shown that Jonathan’s holistic approach to music is about creating an immersive, aesthetic experience to sooth all your senses. As a Listener and concert visitor you are invited to enter that other place of tranquil guitar fingerpicking, ethereal synthesizers and melancholic yet joyful melodies.”

This was my first time watching a live show at Nalen Klubben which is really a “hole in the wall” place located at the bottom of Nalen, entered through an alleyway. I have never felt such calm when I entered the venue where I would find flowers covering the tables and the stage while also smelling the scent of incense. Almost completely quiet in the venue, people where only whispering while listening to the calm tunes on the speakers before Jonathan entered the stage. A very interesting act which really touched me and really soothes my mind and helped me leave the everyday stress outside of the doors. Something I didn’t really expect from the past, longtime member of the Gothic Metal band TRIBULATION. Really cool transition and definitely something I will add to my more “calm” playlist.

Best performance: ‘Where Devils Weep’
Rating: 8/10

Jonathan Hultén – Everything

SYLVAINE (Black Metal, Blackgaze)

“Music is a language of the soul that allows one to express what cannot be expressed easily in our human life”

A strong duality between worlds. A balance between the beautiful and the harsh, light and darkness, serenity and chaos, the outside world and the inner realm; a juxtaposition between our human life and the spiritual origins. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Sylvaine’s music deals with the extreme range of emotions this human existence has to offer, as a result of existing in this world as a being not from here. In constant conflict with oneself and struggling to adapt to this place we call our own, this musical project serves as an emotional catharsis for the artist, revealing the eternal longing for something else residing within its melodies. Sylvaine has released 4 albums and 1 split EP to date, bringing her on tours all over Europe, North America and South America.”

– Season Of Mist

The transition of the opening act, JONATHAN HULTÉN and the main act, SYLVAINE can only be described as going through a beautiful glade with dying flowers and then suddenly entering the dark forest with all it’s horror and beauty. I really like these dark elements that are introduced in this genre of music, mixed together with soothening, calm tunes. SYLVAINE put these mixes in the pot together in the best way possible and moved, at least me, the whole audience. Katherine have found really amazing live members that helped her perform all of her setlist live, although Katherine in her own person is an amazing talented musician. I found my favorite in the drummer Dorian, who blew me away in those blast beats during “Mono No Aware” which immediately became my favorite track on the whole setlist.

Best performance: ‘Mono No Aware’
Rating: 9/10
SYLVAINE is:
Katherine Shepard – Everything
Maxime Mouquet – Bass, Backing Vocals (Live)
Florian Ehrenberg – Guitar, Backing Vocals (Live)
Dorian Mansiaux – Drums (Live)

Closing Words:

Describing shoegaze/blackgaze genre is something I find very hard, even though I’ve been doing a few reviews now covering such acts and bands.
How could one describe such music, that moves you in a way that find tranquility in your mind while also emptying your body from frustration and stress?
The best way to understand these feelings and what happens to each and own individuals is to experience it on your own. With that being said, I strongly give a recommendation to give a listen or two to these acts and leave your own thoughts in the comment section below.

I have been a Metalhead ever since I was old enough to comprehend what music was. Something really called to me when I for the first time heard my fathers IRON MAIDEN albums being played, that gave me such goosebumps which only made me want more! Ever since then, I’ve been listening into multiple genres with the hunger of exploring new metal music and keeping track of upcoming bands. My favorite genres today is Black Metal and Blackgaze which includes most of my favorite bands, but my biggest favorite of them all is called HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. I’m really passionate about the metal community and frequently goes to concerts to try to support as many band as possible by buying merch and promoting them by doing reviews. I believe with all my heart that the metal community will always be a underground society that will never die, and all it’s habitants are the most amazing individuals that have walked this earth.
