Valley Of The Sun – The Chariot

8/10

This might be the best mix of Stoner & grunge that I have come across. This is more hard rock with specific influences. I have been a fan of the band for a while and more or less been listening to previous releases thinking why not more people know about this.

Moving on to a bit more straightforward type of rock compared to the 2019 release “Old Gods”.

Here I find influences that reach between Alice In Chains, Rage Against The Machine, Kyuss & Guns N´Roses.

What I do like most with the group and this album in particular is the vocals. Ryan Ferrier has a god given set of pipes on him. It suits the diversity of the music, and he also has a deliverance of tone and emotion that is phenomenal. This combined with enticing riffs and a solid, funky, and explosive rhythm section bodes for a pleasant experience.

The riffs are something that always sticks out. Here in more songs on the same album compared to earlier releases. Older songs like “Riding the Dunes” and “Hearts Aflame” tend to sweep you of your feet with the riff first and foremost. Here almost all the songs have something that will engage you in a deeper way.

For me the title track is the track that stands out, but “The Devil I´ve Become” with its melody, “Sweet Sands” with a Audioslave/Rage Against the Machine beat, “As We Decay” with the somber feel to it and “Sunblind” with a pure GnR feel to it also fight for top spot. Maybe tomorrow I will have another opinion?

On this album I think for the first time the feeling is that this is more an even contribution, and everything interlocks in a much more appealing way. And the guitar and the vocals do not have to carry the songs in the same way. Bass and drums take a much bigger piece of the cake and demands more attention. Short and sweet this is a more complete album.

I feel that this album is the best so far from the band and I hope that they continue to develop with this setting. It seems like they like to create and record music together. I can see magic on the horizon if this continues.
