Venom – Storm the Gates

6/10

Black metal veterans Venom hasn’t made a critically acclaimed album since… 1984, I reckon. But they are still rocking and rolling as if they didn’t give a shit about that, which I also reckon they don’t. And as expected, this isn’t the most ingratiating metal album in the world either. This is just pure energy and old school brutality! So how does it hold up? Well, I must admit, quite good. Not great, but okay. These aren’t any new songs that the crowd will cheer for on the following tours, but Cronos still has the voice of a wolf raised in a smokey dungeon and there’s never any doubt of what band you’re listening to. And frankly, what stands out the most about the album isn’t really the songs. It’s the sound. This album has a sound that has been quite debated among critics, especially the drums, that are mixed very loudly. Some people think it sounds awful, but for me it’s something different, and it has the raw edge that I think Venom should have. It’s old school, it’s rough and it’s cool. Yeah, “Storm the Gates” is a cool album. Although I hope for a slightly stronger song material the next time around!
