Witchorious – Witchorious

6/10

France and metal are for me synonymous to Gojira. But here we have a new Doom metal act formed in 2019 in Paris. And of course, Black Sabbath can be mentioned but bands dropped in describing the band are also Mastodon and Electric Wizard, I for one could add a slice of Neurosis to the palette, and drifting easily between doom to post rock and occult rock (I am in very deep water here namedropping genres I am not very well travelled in but musically I can relate to the bands I mention).

Antoine and Lucies frustrating and agonizing painful vocals are ventilated through those lyrics on this debut, here is where I think the Post rock angst appear the most .

“The Witch” is a first rounder “favourite track” and a song like “Blood” is the first “typical” doom song on the album where we can find the Birmingham legends footprints the most, if it had been more up tempo it could been even more like the Birmingham legends?  (Well, the first part of the song anyway, then it folds out to be typical Witchorious metal). Its followed by a very spaced out song named “Eternal Night”.
From the get go it’s kind of like an adventure – a journey listening to this record. It grew on me for each listen and took a huge leap up on the “albums of the year” list. I kind of grown into the album where the songs flows on and  kind of clinging onto each  other. “Sanctuarie” got a solo that stands out a bit from the song and catches your attention if you (as me sometimes out of pure joy-nothing else) “drift out” while listening.

A small band from France on a small label from Italy doesn´t leave much trace on the web so it is all up to you, the listener, to decide what it really sounds like. But what I have found out is that this album was at first meant to be a EP, and with a two year working process it ended up being a full length. The band themselves says that they wanted to step out of the now very beaten path of what traditional doom metal sounds like with this album. And at last I found a tiny review from a Bandcamp page (bandcamp.com/Buck09) who read “It’s a wicked display of painful doom, riff heavy, melodic stoner, sludge, with well-structured song craft that avoids the stereotypical cliches in the sub-genre. And I could not agree more.

But I don´t know- well there is not much trace of Sabbath or Cathedral here.
From what I have read, the album lyrics deals with mental conflicts and psychological distress with the band having a laugh at the clichés surrounding the genre, but they said to have created an occult atmosphere the bandmembers can all agrees on.

“Watch me die” ends up being the standout track after all, and if you´re looking for a ballad…- you will find it in “To The Grave”.
