Xion – Between Shadows and Gods

6/10

Well, to sit down in late 2023 and clicking on “Play” on the debut album from Xion throws me back to what it must have been like in the bay area early mid 80s but if Anthrax were coming out of that area too.

There are so many reference points to that era in metal its almost overwhelming. For you guys who adored everything about that era Xion is the band to lend your ear to. Robin Björks resemblance to Joey Belladona (Anthrax) and Chuck Billy (Testament) is in some parts on the album striking. Such a young band totally into the part of music and making it their own but still pay homage to history is amazing.
But it’s not only bone crushingly hard, it also still has melodies. First taste of that is the brilliant “Man who played God” and after the instrumental “Carro-Kann” the band erupts into my favourite track “Vision of the blind”- damn! Listen to the perfect scream in the end of the song! The more I listen to it I find new song battling for stand out track on the album. Don’t think you can just breeze through the album, in the end you got a track like “Derailed” hit you surprisingly. They leave us on a very high note with “Buried with love” and it only can get better from here.

Lovely to hear such an album in 2024. What a start to the new year. This is maybe the shortest review I have ever done. Is it a bad thing or not?  But there is not much more to say about it.
If you´re a thrasher or a very open-minded metalhead that doesn´t defend the early years of thrash as holy of the holiest, this is very much an album to look forward to
