Live review – Sabaton Open Air 2019: Elvenking
The most ungrateful task of the whole festival must be the closing act on the slot right after the culmination that the namesakes of this festival really is. And maybe that is why Italian Elvenking chooses to kick off their folk inspired power-metal show 30min before the dedicated time slot, in hopes to catch some of the festival goers on the fly and they indeed succeed! An impressing crowd gathers in front of Primo Victoria-stage and gets a formidable performance from a band that are on the tip of their toes from the very beginning.
It kicks of with “Draugen’s Maelstrom” and “Pagan Revolution” and the energy is through the roof. Davide Moras can’t be still for one second and runs around like a mad man and gets everyone onboard. They dedicate “Elvenlegions” to all of the fans and gets a warm, loving reception. And from here on forward it just keeps accellerating. Even a brand new song like “Under The Sign Of A Black Star” gets the crowd wild. The song itself is a metal monster which pins you to the ground and just keeps hitting you in the face!
The level of frenzy Elvenking displays is simply astounding up to this point and i am truly amazed. The whole band brings professialism and joy to this cold, dark corner of Sweden tonight. In the semi-ballad “The Divided Heart”, I can’t help to think of Davide Moras as a love child between Michael Kiske and Tobias Sammet. A more energetic front man with a sharper voice is hard to come by. Even the combined violin/drum/bass- solo just sets the mood and never slows the set down for a second.
Following “Silverseal” is a real crowdpleaser and Davide plays the audience like a instrument of its own. He cant stop thanking everyone here tonight for their support and love, and everyone gives back as much as they get which is a lot. The one thing I always comes back to in my notes, yes i’m old, is the connection between the band and crowd, it just seems to give and give both ways. A true love story between the two!
After a rugged and somewhat speedy “Neverending Nights” (much to my own pleasing, it really fits the song) we get “Pagan Purity” and finally a incendiery speech of the importance to love yourself, never listen to what anybody thinks of you and how you always should go your own way before we are launched in a beautiful “The Loser”! A perfect ending of a perfect festival.
I must shamely admit that I wasnt in my best of moods going to this particular show, it was late, I had worked two jobs during the week. I was tired, cold and ready to give up but I said I would take a look and how glad I am that i did! I witnessed what became one of the best shows of the entire festival. Such level of joy for the music, love for the fans and perfection in execution is rare these days. Thank you Elvenking and thank you Sabaton Open Air!
